Årsta Swans v Norrtälje Dockers
Skarpnäck sportfältet Sat 23rd September We came out in the first quarter ready to play with good clean skills and hard running from the start- dominating possession we provided good delivery to our hard leading forwards. Straight kicking saw us kick the first 5 goals of the game, our best start to a game all year. Quarter time score 31-1… Small tactical changes in the midfield and hard work saw the Dockers claw themselves back into the game one contest at a time, but we were also up for the fight. The third quarter saw hard contested football as the fatigue started to set in, with both sides landing blows. But we held, contest after contest, individual efforts in every portion of the field set up the final quarter for the contest footy deserved. Of all the trainings, matches, cup games, injuries, sweat and tears was going to come down to last quarter in the final match of the year. Fatigued legs ran out, adrenaline fuelling the muscles. The Dockers quickly kicked two goals and brought the lead back to within a goal, 10mins left on the clock meaning anything can happen. Then we scored on of our own to create a tiny buffer. Contest after contest it was taking everything of every player on the field. The Dockers scored the next, back to within a goal and the pressure rose but we quickly answered, The Horse kicking his 7th goal of the game. Chasing the game it seemed the Dockers had more run in their legs and we weee struggling to hold on, they kicked the next goal and it was back to with one goal yet again. 2mins left and a couple of repeat bounces took a minute off the clock. The ball willed it’s way into their forward line and a chaotic goal line contest ensued. Then the football IQ of none other than Rob Young showed, with a da diving effort to rush a behind. 5points the difference and surely only seconds now left on the clock. The ball is kicked out to the back flank with everyone descending on it, we manage a kick forward through the midfield and the siren blows! Final score Årsta 12.6.78 Norrtälje 11.7 73 And just like that we are SAFF champions 🏆🏆🏆 SAFF Round 4 September 03, 2023 Årsta v Norrtälje Skarpnäck Sportfält We started the day 2-1 down in the series meaning this was a must win match to keep our Champions League hopes alive. A wet weathered week resulted in a wet and boggy field which means one thing in AFL- it’s going to be a scrap. Norrtälje had the better of the first quarter with the wind managing to kick the first three goals of the game as our defensive running was shown to be vulnerable and we struggled to adjust to the wet footy. Luckily a late goal of Connors managed to steady the ship and give us something positive going into quarter time, only two goals down. A better performance in the second quarter, our midfield hard at the contest and everyone working hard for each other. We managed to pull the score back almost even at half time. This has now become to contest we expected and the next half of footy would show if we're up for the fight. The third quarter started much like the first, the Dockers midfield adjusting tactics and putting away a quick three goals and pulling away to a handy lead. The time had come for us to lift, it was now or never and it felt around the entire ground that our efforts lifted, we were first to the ball and hardest at it, and for the first time this season, we saw the Dockers fatigue and we were able to outrun them. We clawed two goals back late in the third to stay in the contest, and set ourselves up to come home with the breeze. Last quarter proved to be the best quarter this far this season. Our entire defence stepped up against the pressure time and time again. We remained hard at the contest and were able to spread faster than our tired opponents. Our defence holding the Dockers scoreless in the last quarter while at the same time Corey and Connor put on a forward line clinic. With four goals between them in the quarter the landed the knockout blows needed to ensure we came away with a 19 point victory. Special mentions are not necessary as this was one hell of a team effort right across the board. What a victory Swannies and this leads to a great 5th and deciding match Sept 23 at home. Allez allez allez! 🦢🦢 Norrtällje 7. 4. 46 Årsta 11. 9. 75 SAFF Round 3 Årsta Swans v Norrtälje Dockers August 12, 2023 Norrtällje Sportcentrum Was always going to be a tough away game coming back after summer and low on numbers, but we fielded a team and selected our acting captain Jan Lorenz in the absence of el capitan Can. A bit of positive news before kick off when we were able to include Ben Abbas fresh over from Aus in our team list, giving us an option for interchange during the game. Without star ruckman Linus Andersson it was Matty B and Benny G to take on the ruck duties. Norrtällje started well and before we could get going they had piled on 2-3 goals. We managed to get a goal back and stabilise although heading into the first break four-five goals down and work to do. The second quarter went much the same way as the first, with Norrtällje harder at the ball and using the ball piling on the goals. However with a slight breeze and some fantastic decisions with ball in hand, we had our best quarter of the day kicking three goals of our own, however unable to stop the flow and we’re out scored by the Dockers again. A firey half time speech by Oscar was the kick up the ass we all needed. The team much harder at the contest in the second half with some promising football played by stand-in captain Jan Lorenz and Jesper Wilnerson linking up with multiple handballs and chains coming out of the backline. However not one goal in the second half saw a confident Dockers team run away with the score line. In summary a very disappointing game with few positives to mention. Can only hope we can get numbers to training and to the upcoming games and make a better show of ourselves. Lorenz 🏆 SWEDISH CUP MATCH REPORT 🏆 Norrtällje Dockers v Årsta Swans An absolute cracking day weather wise saw us take on Norrtällje on their turf with 20min quarters to push the legs. With Norrtällje missing their 1st choice ruck, Linus dominated the tap outs and gave us some midfield dominance and causing them to play defensive midfield strategy. Errant kicking at goal however resulted in an even ball game at quarter time. We found our game in the second kicking with a slight breeze and with the aid of some brilliance from Oscar and some great set shot kicking from first gamer Sam gave us a small but handy 10 point lead at half time. The game was already shaping up to be a hard contest with both teams putting their bodies on the line at all occasions. A very impressive burst through the pack from Jan Lorenz playing with some confidence and was rewarded with a downfield free kick leading to a goal. Contributions were coming from the entire team today. The 3rd quarter continued much the same even against the breeze. A strong arm wrestle in the midfield and a couple of spot fires here and there showed that was red hot cup final contest. Bodies crashing everywhere and fatigue starting to kick in, this was going to a survival of the fittest. A great arm wrestle saw us go in at 3 quarter time with a 10pt lead and kicking with the breeze in the last. Coming out firing in the last saw us kick the first goal and we began to get the feeling we could do enough to come home with the cup, but a spirited fight and continues running from the Dockers saw them pile on a few late goals and run out victorious by 1 pt. Phillis 1 Best on ground: Linus Andersson SAFF Round 2 Årsta Swans v Norrtälje Dockers May 27, 2023 Skarpnäck Sportfält Norrtälje played a strong first quarter with much of the play living in their half of the ground, as we found it tough to transport the ball the length of the field against the wind. This resulted in high intensity contest footy requiring the use of our full bench/interchange throughout the first. Errant kicking by the dockers saw both teams go into quarter time goalless, score 5-2 favouring the dockers. We made good use of the breeze in the second, getting some clean ball out of the middle aided by our tall timber in Linus. Fast movement from the middle saw our forwards 1v1 with their opponents and we kicked a couple of quick goals to get going. Strong tackling through the quarter and fantastic defensive pressure saw us go into half time with a handy lead 5.7 37 to Norrtälje 2.6 18. An outstanding individual effort from Oscar Magnusson in the 3rd quarter saw us go coast to coast and kick a strong goal against the breeze (special mention to Ben Van Dam for a quality assist). It was this point we knew the game was ours for the taking, and we had just one strong quarter of fighting left and a handy breeze to compliment. But Norrtälje had other plans. With tired legs and no substitutions the entire match, against the wind they came out fighting. A gallant effort kicking 2-3 strong goals against the breeze. But the damage had been done, we did the work in the 2nd and 3rd quarters so when we kicked our last of the game only 30s before the siren, we were already comfortably home and we registered our first win in a long time, well deserved! A special mention needs to go to our captain for playing a captains game, solid in defense the entire game, bone crunching tackles throughout. Rappaoccio 1 SAFF Round 1 Årsta Swans v Norrtällje Dockers May 17, 2023 What better a way to start of the SAFF 2023 season then with a wet weather match up in Norrtällje. The Dockers jumped out of the gates kicking the first three goals of the match, putting us on the back foot. A quick change and Corey Phillis injected some life into the midfield, turning it into an arm wrestle. Disappointingly even with a slight breeze, we went into the first interchange trailing even after a master stroke of a goal from 50 by Chris Murr A change of tactics to adapt to the conditions and potentially spurred on by the goal after the siren, we worked hard in the second quarter teaming up well through the middle. Connor Clarke always presenting in the forward line brought himself and the rest of us back into the match with a couple of strong and quick goals. We won the quarter, but still trailed going into half time. A short recovery and discussion at half time saw us come out firing in the third, stringing four goals in a row whilst our back line tightened up and worked hard for each other. By far the best quarter of footy of the day which resulted in us leading at three-quarter time by 1pt. Our midfield dominance forced a tactical change of the Dockers to try and stem the flow. The final quarter… the challenge was set, win the quarter and we win the match. The weather had other plans, sending down drenching rain and kicking up a strong wind favouring the Dockers, they came out strong kicking multiple goals. But we were up for the fight, it became a real scrap with the wet ball tired legs. We got a goal back and gained some momentum, however it was the Dockers who kicked the last of the match and managed to take the victory. After a great initial couple of minutes for the Swans, we learned the hard way on how Gaelic football should be played, the Gaels linked up well with handballs and cut right through our defence on a number of occasions to take a generous lead at half time. After time to adjust and a tweak of some tactics we managed to turn the game around, coming home strong with a couple of 6-pointers to almost snatch the win. But it wasn’t to be, and Round 1 goes to the Gaels. Final score: Stockholm Gaels: 3 goals , 9 overs (45 points) Årsta Swans: 3 goals, 5 overs (33 points). |
